THE STORY

AZZ-IS REBEL JAZZ FESTIVAL takes place the first weekend of November each and every year.

The festival takes its name from the original “AZZ IZZ”, a 1970s Venice jazz club run by Sax player, Billie Harris that once stood on the street we now know as Abbot Kinney Blvd.

Our festival also shares the creative and revolutionary spirit of the very first “Rebel Jazz Fest”, which took place in 1960, at Cliffwalk Manor in Newport, Rhode Island.

That DIY festival was Charles Mingus' and Max Roach's thumb in the eye of the more established and very mainstream Newport Jazz Festival. We honor those incredibly authentic artists and their militant musical movement.

This very Venice, totally grassroots event is only made possible with a little help from our friends... That's You.

Donations go directly to our free and family-friendly production with a portion of the proceeds benefiting our fiscal sponsors, The Venice Heritage Museum!

AZZ-IS REBEL JAZZ FEST is the first full-scale jazz festival in Venice California’s history and the only designated / dedicated "Alternative” Jazz Festival on the west coast.

This is not your grandparents' Jazz Festival.
